PROFESSOR OF BOOKS AT NYUI first met Herb London when he showed up, unannounced and uninvited, at my apartment in New York. It was about 5 months before the Gubernatorial election and I had just come back from the Republican convention where I had been nominated as the Republican candidate for Governor of New York in 1990.
The doorman told me that Dr. London asked to come up to my apartment. I decided "What the hell?" even though I had no interest in meeting him! I told the doorman to let him come up.
He came in without his toupee' which was the last time I ever saw him without it.
He started off the conversation by telling me that I should not have accepted the gubernatorial nomination; it belonged to him.
He said that state Senator Roy Goodman had promised it to him but Goodman backed out because he did not have $500,000 to contribute to the campaign. It was obvious, said London that I had bought the nomination and only got it because of my making that sized contribution (all nonsense, but that's another story).
He said that he was accepting the conservative party nomination so that he could destroy Senator Goodman and the Republican party. I told him he would destroy himself (he did in 1994 when he voiced anti Semitic sentiments).
I told him we should get together because we could beat the living hell out of Cuomo since the state was a living disaster. I told him that I was 67 , did not want to serve more than 2 years if elected and that I would appoint him as my successor.
He said NO and what he wanted to do was to destroy Goodman and the Republican party. He was convinced that the Conservative party would get more votes than the Republicans and that would put them second on the ballot after 1990. Of course he did not but that's another story.
I asked him to give up the nonsense and to run with me but he refused. I knew the election could not be won with the conservatives battling the Republicans but London didn't give a hoot in hell about that or defeating Cuomo.
He refused to listen to reason and left with animosity on his mouth and in his soul.
For the next 5 months all he did was tear me apart, tear apart the Republican party and try to claim that I was not a real Republican!
To the best of my knowledge he never once went after Cuomo, never once went after the Democrats nor ever said anything as to why Cuomo should not be reelected. All the fool did was tear apart the Republican party (I did a good enough job on my own) and try to denigrate me. He never criticized Cuomo, never criticized the destruction of the state under the democrats, never once went after the democrats in the House. All he did was go after the Republicans.
The biggest enemy the national Republican party has to this day is the Conservative party and not the Democratic party.
What was the final outcome of this two front war I fought?
