Here is the other side of the coin,it wasn't a witch hunt;

it was a justifiable hunt for Communists who were seeking to overthrow the American government, create a revolution and deliver the United States to the Communist party of the Soviet Union! The members of the communist party permeated the American government and the media.

Hollywood was a vipers den of fellow travelers and one famous literary type after another was an avowed communist or a surreptitious communist. The communists all had one objective: the overthrowall of the American government and its replacement with the American communist party that was totally and completely beholden to the madman, Josef Stalin, murderer and executioner.

"By 1938, the Soviet espionage apparatus in Washington had penetrated the State Department, the Treasury Department, the Bureau of Standards and the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland. "

MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL THE COMMUNISTS DEDICATED TO THE REVOLUTIONARY OVERTHROWAL OF THE UNITED STATES PERMEATED THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT!

The facts are that there were witches out there and the stew they were trying to brew was revolution and the downfall of the United States as well as the deliverance of the United States to the Soviet Union!

Now that the Soviet Union is gone their records are becoming available to western researchers. Slowly but surely those records are being released. Those records attest to the often stated but difficult to prove contention that the American government and literate were riddled with communists involved in espionage against the American government and the American people. We now have the factual proof as one more piece of evidence after another is released! It is both sickening and frightening!

"The release of Soviet archives has shown that McCarthy, although driven by anti-Communist paranoia, may have been right, because there were far more Soviet spies operating in America than many had believed."

In other words the idiots that claim the hunt for communists was a witch hunt are either fools or stupid! They deny history and the facts.

1. My Growing Up With the Communists.

I grew up in a neighborhood called "Sunnyside" which was on Long Island, New York. We lived in Sunnyside from 1931 until about 1943. The Phipps family developed Sunnyside in the 1920's and it even contained an apartment complex know as the Phipps Apartments (in the postwar my 2 brothers and my sister lived there).

Sunnyside was a hotbed of Communists. We lived in the upstairs walk up apartment of a house located at 43-08 48th Street, just off of what was then called Foster Avenue. Our landlords were Abe and Estelle Harriton. They were members of the local communist party.

The Communist party head in Sunnyside was a man by the name of Crosby whose first name I do not remember. I used to see him all the time at the Harritons. The head of the American communist party was a man by the name of Gerhard Eisler. He lived up the street from our house. In 1945 he fled the United States and showed up in Eastern Germany where he was treated and was a big wig of the communist party.

The Harritons spent years trying to convert my mother to communism. They would give her lectures almost every day why she should be a communist and should join the American communist party.

My mother would listen to their innumerable lectures and take it all in, file it away for future use and string them along (she had no choice; they were our landlords and we were always behind in the rent). In 1941, if memory serves me correctly, mother moved from the Harritons house on 48th street to 39th street in Sunnyside.

After she was out of the Harritons house she asked for a meeting with the pastor of the Roman Catholic church in Woodside which was the church we attended. When she met with the Pastor of Saint Theresa's church she made the following points to the pastor:

The communists were seeking the overthrowall of the American government.
They had and would continue to infiltrate every major institution in the United States including the American government, the Catholic church and all the religions, the trade unions, the major corporations, the charitable foundations, the the teaching profession, the universities, the media, the movie industry, the newspapers, the magazines, the the local governments and the state governments. Their objective was to infiltrate every major institution in the country with members of the party or with fellow travelers.
The Communists sought the overthrowall of democracy and would replace it with a totalitarian system of dictatorship.
There was no limit to which they would go to achieve their objective of overthrowing the Government of the United States and of creating a revolution in the United States
The loyalty of the communist party members was to Josef Stalin and to the Soviet Union and the United States was an enemy of the Soviet Union.

The Pastor of St. Theresa's Roman Catholic Church laughed at my mother and assured her they were no threat to the United States or to the world. He dismissed her.

From that moment on (1941 until she died in 1976) my mother crusaded to try and convince anyone and everyone that would listen that the communists were a major threat to the United States. Remember this was all in 1941!

This is what I grew up with. I was there and I heard my mother talk about it until she died in 1976. For my Doctorate at the University of Dijon in France I majored in Marxian economics and minored in Soviet (not Russian) history. My mother may not have convinced the Pastor of our church but she did not have to convince me. I grew up communism! If I heard it a thousand times I heard it a zillion times: Communism was out to destroy the American system of democracy and freedom and replace it with a totalitarian state. Who said that? The American communists said that openly in the 1930's. They went underground after Yalta but most of them had been underground from day one since they were involved in sabotage of the United States
