Special note:
In the following article all figures are approximate and are not intended to be decimal point accurate. They are calculated to give you an idea of vital facts and nothing else. This caveat does not disparage or invalidate the fundamental truth of the calculations and their implications.
My Italian father in law came to the United States legally in 1916. He then served in the American Army for WW1.
My mother in law came here legally in 1921.
My parents came here, just before the stock market crash in 1929, legally along with my entire family.
We were legal immigrants.
It appears as if a good part of the Hispanic population of the United States are illegal entrants and have come across the Mexican/American border.
It may be that there are about 10,000,000 illegal working immigrants in the United States at this moment (I note that President Bush used the figure of 11,000,000 illegal immigrants which is higher than my figure to which readers objected as much too high!.
The civilian labor force (latest data for March 2006) was 150,652,000.
Employment was 143,641,000
Unemployment was 7,011,000
The unemployment rate for all workers was 4.7%.
The unemployment rate for Hispanic or Latino workers was 5.4 %.
EMPLOYMENT STATUS OF THE HISPANIC OR LATINO POPULATION FOR FEBRUARY, 2006 IN THE UNITED STATES.

In the first quarter of 2006 the United States produced a Gross Domestic Product of about $13,020,100,000,000 ($13 trillion, 20 billion) which was more that one-third of world GDP!
That GDP was produced by 143,641,000 workers.
Each worker produced $13,020,000,000,000/143,641,000.
Cancel out the zero's: $13,020,000,000/143,641.
The result is that each worker produced about $90,643 of GDP in the first quarter, 2006.
Now multiply the employed in the Hispanic or Latino employed of 19,116,000 by $90,643 and the result is that the Hispanic or Latino population produced about $1.773 trillion of GDP.
In the first quarter of 2006 that $1.773 trillion equaled about 13.6 percent of the GDP: $13,020,000,000,000/$1,773,000,000 or around 13.6% of the total GDP!
